Animal shelter in Largo adds facilities

SPCA Tampa Bay, a nonprofit based in Largo, is expanding its services to be able to provide rehabilitative care to orphaned, injured, and sick wildlife. Among the animals that can be cared for are squirrels, rabbits, blue jays, and opossums.

SPCA Tampa Bay has always been partnering with other organizations for rehabilitation and care, but transferring such animals to these facilities can be stressful for an animal that is already sick. This new enclosure can accommodate up to 100 animals in four separate areas and provides a semi-natural and safe environment before they are released back into the wild. Information about such added facilities can be made known to the public through flyer printing services.

It also adds to the organization’s existing space for those that are not mature enough for an enclosure outdoors. Specialized care will still be carried out at partner organizations.

CEO of SPCA Tampa Bay, Martha Boden, said that the shelter accepts all kinds of animals that need help. She added that the shelter is licensed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and that the new enclosure enables her organization to better rehabilitate orphaned, injured, and sick wildlife, so that they can eventually return to their natural homes.

SPCA Tampa Bay was founded in 1940 and is one of few shelters in the county that accepts a wide variety of wildlife.
