On September 7, the Lakeland University football team defeated Apopka.
Apopka is 4th highest ranking team in Class 8A while Lakeland is 4th in Class 7A. According to Khalil Crawford, linebacker for Lakeland, winning the game was a special triumph. He knew Apopka was a talented team and it would be a challenge, but teamwork proved crucial as Lakeland won 37-20.
Bill Castle, coach of the Lakeland team, stated the win was significant because he once had the coach of Apopka, Rick Darlington, as a player and believes him to be the best coach in Florida. He also expressed pride in his team and their efforts.
Nearing halftime, Lakeland gained a permanent lead. Demarkcus Bowman broke a 13-13 tie with a run of 70 yards with four minutes left before the half. With a field goal by Jace Hohenthaner, halftime started with a score of 23-13. After halftime, Bowman ran 27 yards for a touchdown, and had 14 carries and 153 yards in the game.
Although the offense slipped at one point and missed a field goal, the defense made up for it and created a fumble. The game ended with a pass for 13 yards and a failed fourth down attempt.
Banner printing is a common way to celebrate wins. Colleges often use Banners for sports to enhance school pride and motivate the team.
