On November 7, the Lakeland Fire Department began its yearly holiday toy drive.
This is the fourth year that the firefighters have held the event, and seven stations around the community will collect toys. These are 2104 S. Florida Avenue, 215 Brunnell Parkway, 5050 State Road 33N, 701 E. Main Street, 110 W. Bella Vista, 3101 Lakeland Highlands Road, and 3150 Drane Field Road. New toys in their original Packaging can be dropped off at these locations. The Dream Center of Lakeland and the Children's Home Society of Greater Lakeland will take the toys and give them to underprivileged children.
Before the holidays in 2015, local firefighters were able to gather toys worth over $7,000 and donate them, so those involved will be looking to better that total this year.
Firefighters have made the event a tradition for several years. According to Gary Ballard, fire chief for Lakeland, it is the anticipated event of the year for his team. They can feel grateful, give to the needy, and show hundreds of local children that the community is looking out for them while they enjoy their toys.
Along with the toys the firefighters donate, they could also hire a holiday card printer to make cards for adults in need and mail them out.
This year’s toy drive will end on Thursday, December 15
