The Jacksonville Symphony will be ending its Florida Blue Classical 2023-2024 series in early June.
For his 9th year, Cortney Lewis will be leading the orchestra in an evening of one of Jacksonville Symphony patrons' favorite pieces - "Symphony Fantastic " by Herbert Berlioz.
To begin the program, the orchestra will perform Thomas Andes "The Exterminating Angel Symphony.” This orchestral work was created from Luis Buñuel's classic 1962 surrealist film and explores the story in four movements - dinner guests' arrival, an obsessive and ferocious march, a lulling berceuse, and a seductive waltz.
Considered Romantic Era's foundation, Berlioz's "Symphony Fantastic: Episode in the Life of an Artist," one of his first forays into program music, depicts a series of hallucinations that come from a love affair that failed. Often thought of as semi-autobiographical, Berlioz took three years to create the musical story of his journey to the edge of suicide after his failed relationship with young Irish actor Harriet Smithson.
Businesses and corporations often support the arts through donations made by individuals and Corporate Gifts.
These performances will end the 2023-2024 season before the orchestra goes on summer hiatus. Its opening performance for the 2024-2025 season will be on September 21st with Mahler's Symphony No.2 "Resurrection."
Symphonie Fantastic will be performed Friday, June 7 and Saturday, June 8 beginning at 7:30 pm at Jacoby Hall, 300 Water Street at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts.
