Jacksonville festival puts persimmons on pedestals

Jacksonville locals may attend the Fifth Annual Persimmon Festival coming in early November.

The persimmon is a type of fruit that resembles a small orange tomato. It can be eaten dried, cooked, or in its natural condition. The persimmon grows on a tree and ripens in the fall.

This year's festival will feature live music, tastings, educational workshops and a host of vendors selling a wide variety of persimmon-base food products. Attendees will also be offered free samples of persimmons in various states, in foods such as deserts and even in beverages such as beer and tea. The operators of the farm will also be offering tours, and a Kids’ Zone will help keep the little ones occupied.

The Eat Your Yard Jax Farm is a not-for-profit plant nursery and educational center that focuses on medicinal and edible plants. Its operators began hosting the Persimmon Festival as a means of bringing attention to the fruit and also to its mission of encouraging people to grow and eat their own food in their own backyards.

Supporters of nonprofit organizations may want to put Flyers up around their neighborhoods, enlisting the help of flyer printing companies.

Tickets will cost $20 if bought in advance and $25 at the door. Kids under the age of 10 get in free.

As in years past, it will be taking place at the Eat Your Yard Jax Farm, located at 6500 Utsey Road, Jacksonville on Sunday, November 2.
