Jacksonville enjoys special fruit

The first Annual Persimmon Festival will be taking place in Jacksonville in early November.

Tastings will begin at 11:00 am with persimmon apple mimosas. That will be followed at 11:30 am with persimmon chuckney (chutney) and at noon with guava sorbet.

At 12:30, guests can taste persimmon bread and at 1:00 they can get samplings of fresh persimmons. Jujube ice cream will be available at 1:30 and there will be a Backyard Buffalo demonstration at 2:00 pm. Paw Paw ice cream will be served at 2:30 and that will be followed at 3:00 with a roselle jelly tasting. The afternoon will end with a spring roll demonstration at 3:30 pm.

Talks will be going on from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm with topics including hydroponics, persimmons and health, composting, micro gardening, cooking with kids, and hügelkultur (using decaying wood as part of a composting bed.

A kids’ tent will have giant bubbles at 11:00 am, worms and compost chat at 11:30 am, and butterfly play at noon. The afternoon schedule will begin with a sugar cane tasting and demo at 12:30 pm, a take-home air plant workshop at 2:00 pm, and Pete the Cat will be available for petting at 3:00 pm as part of a book reading. Kids often want T- shirts featuring a specific graphic design of their favorite book character like Pete the Cat.

The Persimmon Festival will be Sunday, November 7 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at 6500 Utsey Road.
