Taxis to be helped by Broward County

Commissioners from Broward County, in which Hollywood is located, have been discussing ways to improve the taxi cab business in light of its legalization of the Uber ride-booking service based on smartphones.

Bertha Henry, Administrator of Broward County, met with concerned taxi drivers this month. John Camillo, President of Yellow Cab, claims that his company has lost 25% of its business since 2014 when Uber entered the market. Uber’s prices are typically 60% lower and taxis cannot compete as their rates are set by the County.

Consequently, at an informal workshop, the commissioners will be considering several paths to take that could help the taxiing industry.

One of these would be taxi carpooling where drivers would be allowed to pick up additional passengers during the ride of the original customer and be able to add charges. Another would a virtual parking lot wherein taxi drivers would be on an electronic waiting list and wait in a virtual line to pick up a passenger at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, rather than having to sit in the holding lot with numerous other cabs.

The County may want to consider booklet printing where it could put together these ideas and the others it has for helping the taxi industry. The various cab companies could then distribute these to its drivers for them to review for further discussion.
