Special art exhibit concludes yearlong study

The ninth Annual Hollywood Academy of Arts and Sciences Middle School Art Exhibition is currently open at the ArtsPark Gallery.

This is a different type of exhibit, as students from the middle school worked with Holocaust survivor and renowned author Bernard Mayer, and Grammy-winning musicians as part of the Art Master Series. In this course of study, professional artists mentor students through the use of art to help them develop through these years of transition.

Art teacher Hilary Fine led the students in a yearlong period of advanced training in the visual arts. They were introduced to the theme of ‘Never Again’ by Mayer from his book ‘Entombed’. They learned about real world issues in their discussions with Mayer as part of the Art Master Series.

The students were also involved in a multi-curriculum project that integrated art and science in the form of the Florida Radon Poster Contest. They researched the radioactive element and its dangers and then created an awareness poster for the contest. Local Print companies may have been used a resource to help them with this poster.

Fine said the selection for the exhibition was made by peer judges, with a formal critique and process that students included as part of their studies. An opening reception for the exhibit was held on Thursday, April 2 and included an appearance from Mayer and performances from several award-winning musicians.
