Hollywood will ask voters to approve bond issues

Hollywood would like to build a new police headquarters, upgrade two golf courses, and make improvements throughout the city, but it needs voters to approve three bond issues to provide the funding. The city council recently announced it will hold a special election to hear from residents.

The first bond would be for the new police station, which would cost approximately $72.5m. The building would offer 120,000 square feet, almost doubling the size of the present headquarters, which is 76,000 square feet. It would also have a parking garage with room for 450 vehicles.

The second bond issue would be for $64m, which the city would use to improve parks throughout the city, buy the Sunset Golf Course (which is now closed), and upgrade two other golf courses Hollywood owns.

The third bond issue would ask for $23m to improve neighborhoods throughout the city with traffic calming measures such as sound walls. Voters can approve all of the measures, none of them, or any combination. Officials dealing with measures like this could work with Print shops to create informative materials for voters.

The special election will be held March 12. If voters agree, property taxes will increase throughout the city for a period of 25 years. Taxes would amount to approximately $10 to $16 per month, depending on the home's assessed valuation.
