Hollywood police take on local school in basketball

Recently, basketball team members at Driftwood Middle School approached their school resource officer, Patrick Agenor, about playing a pickup game against Hollywood police officers. Agenor, who went into law enforcement in part because he remembers playing basketball games with cops when he was a kid, was delighted and helped set it up.

The game took place in the school gym, and was attended by several hundred people, including faculty, students, parents, and police. The students, whose team was made up of both girls and boys from the varsity teams, managed to beat the officers by a score of 44-39.

Ben Joseph, the basketball coach and athletic director, said he was pleased by the outcome of the game for several reasons. It brought the students, community, and police together in a pleasant interaction, but he was also proud that instead considering themselves outclassed, the students played hard and won the game. Joseph believes the spirit they displayed when facing long odds bodes well for their success later in life.

In fact, the success of the event was such that the students have already said they want to play against the police again soon.

For basketball games and other sporting events, organizers can work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer, allowing excitement to build among area residents.
