Recently, residents of Hollywood met at City Hall with project managers of the Johnson Street Complete Streets Project to learn more about its plans.
Johnson Street is one of the primary east-west arteries in the city and provides access to the Johnson Street Business District, two hospitals, parks, and hundreds of business and residential properties.
The street will be rebuilt with each direction having one travel lane and a center lane for making left turns. Both sides of the roadway will have bicycle lanes and concrete sidewalks. A new drainage system and decorative street lights will be installed. There will also be pedestrian ramps at intersections compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and shelters for bus stops.
The City of Hollywood Commission, Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, and the Florida Department of Transportation (DOT) have partnered together on this project in response to concerns from pedestrians, motorists, and business owners about the condition of the roadway and potential safety issues.
The cost of the project will be approximately $16m. Federal funds in the amount of $12m are being sought by the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Florida DOT. Approximately $4.4 million will be committed by the City.
During the planning process, those in the community will be able to share their ideas by means of community and one-to-one meetings, as well as potential surveys made possible by Print companies.
