Broward County is replacing its 911 communications system, and wants permission to place a communications tower in Hollywood. City commissioners recently voted unanimously against the proposal, according to an article in the Sun Sentinel.
The network requires that seven towers be built to replace the aging system, and the county would like to put the Hollywood tower in West Lake Park, which it owns. However, the city has to approve the request to build the tower in the park, and has refused.
The tower, the only one to be potentially located in a park, would be 32 stories in height. The plan ran into opposition from some residents who live near the park, and who fear the tower would have a negative impact on their property values, as well as area wildlife and the park itself. Flyer printing can be used to update issues like this.
An attorney for West Lake Village, Tucker Gibbs, agreed, saying the tower would leave a “highly visible scar” on the area, resulting in a drop of home values near the park. City officials also argue that the county could locate the tower on the roof of the Circ, a downtown high rise.
Caryl Shuham, a city commissioner, said the city has no desire to delay the construction of the new system, but she feels the county should consider the downtown site, rather than the park. If no resolution is reached, the issue could go to court.
