Living aboard a boat may sound romantic, but concerns among Hollywood residents are leading officials to consider changing the laws governing anchorages, with a discussion expected next month.
Before 2009, boaters were not allowed to anchor in local waterways for longer than 24 hours at a time. Then, Florida changed the rules so that boaters could anchor wherever they liked, with no time restrictions, as long as they remained clear of navigational channels.
That has led to some boats anchoring in the same spot for months or, in some cases, a year. Several residents have complained they have seen people who live aboard their boats dumping fuel and other matter into the water.
The complaints have led Hollywood officials to consider creating a mooring field, where boaters would have to pay a daily rate to anchor. They are planning one anchorage in North Lake, and possibly a second in South Lake. Officials say the mooring fields would help tourism, increase the property values of homes nearby, and bring in revenue. The fields are good for boaters as well, because they provide docks for dinghies, laundry services, showers, a toilet pumpout station, and Wi-Fi.
Hollywood officials are expected to discuss the measure in January.
