Hollywood may redesign Young Circle

Young Circle in Hollywood is one of the largest traffic circles in the country, as large as three football fields, and is confusing to many drivers. Now, Hollywood officials are discussing a makeover for the intersection, which frequently jams traffic.

Over 50,000 drivers negotiate the circle daily, going through seven stoplights and dealing with three traffic lanes. Linda Sherwood, a Hollywood commissioner, said to Sun Sentinel that a friend from out-of-town got stuck on the circle, and went around 17 times before he figured out how to exit, which illustrates the complexity of the circle in its current state. A redesign would replace the seven traffic signals with five roundabouts. In addition, the circle would be reconfigured so that traffic flows in both directions. Today, the entire circle is one way.

Officials can work with Print shops to create a mailer for residents explaining project, especially when they are puzzling to many people. Some believe the proposed solution would be even more confusing for drivers than the current configuration, while others think it would streamline traffic and make it much easier to access other parts of the city. One champion of the new design is its creator, traffic consultant Ian Lockwood. He believes the new design will reduce the number of accidents in the circle, which sees about 450 accidents each year.

The project has to be approved by the state and the county, and would take about six years to finish, at a cost of as much as $20m.
