Florida port tests paperless customs

The United States Customs and Border Protection is working with seaport officials from Broward County and two cruise lines to launch the Mobile Passport Control and Automated Passport Control programs at the Port Everglades cruise port.

These programs, which are currently being used at the Miami International Airport and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, would eliminate the need for paper customs declaration Forms.

Inbound travelers who qualify for the Automated Passport Control program would be able to submit their customs declaration Forms and travel documents at kiosks before speaking to a customs officer.

The free Mobile Passport Control app, which is expected to launch in late July, will enable citizens from the United States and Canada to complete their customs declaration form on their smartphones before they arrive.

According to Glenn Wiltshire, Deputy Director of Port Everglades, the port is working closely with Customs and Border Protection so that the arrival process can be more efficient yet still maintain safety and security. A three-month pilot is currently underway to evaluate costs, staff time and efficiency of these programs.

Those at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport may consider using a flyer printing company to create Flyers with more information about these programs so travelers might be able to take advantage of them when going to and from the airport to the port.
