A physical education teacher at the Driftwood Middle School Academy of Health and Wellness in Hollywood was recently honored at the White House for encouraging environmental practices and reducing the use of energy at her school.
Linda Gancitano was one of eight people named ‘Champions of Change for Climate Education and Literacy’ by the White House.
In December 2014, the White House launched the Climate Education and Literacy Initiative which gives out the award. This program is part of the Climate Change Action Plan, which President Barack Obama created so as to educate people about such issues as global warming. The award is given to those who encourage educators, citizens, and students to discover solutions to problems in the environment by using understanding about the issues based on scientific evidence.
The Green Team at the Driftwood Middle School was started by Gancitano in 2008. She created a challenge at the school so as to reduce the use of energy and teach children how to become energy auditors. Other recognitions she has received include ‘Teacher of the Year’ by her school, ‘Florida Green School Teacher of the Year’ and ‘Physical Education Teacher of the Year’ for Broward County.
Flyer printing services is one way the school can inform the community of this special recognition and provide more details about the school’s Green team.
