Elks Lodge celebrates 50th anniversary

The Hollywood West Elks Lodge recently celebrated 50 years of service to veterans and the community, according to an article in the Sun Sentinel.

Many of the members of Lodge #2365 recently enjoyed a catered dinner before dancing to live music.

The Loyal Order of Elks is pledged to “never forget” veterans of the armed forces, which is what led one member, Air Force veteran Telly Sands, to join. She enjoys meeting other women veterans, and is impressed with the Elks' veterans programs.

Paul Houser, the exalted ruler of this lodge and a Vietnam-era veteran of the Navy, said the organization tries to “emphasize veterans” by offering camaraderie via parties, dinners, and social functions held at regular intervals. Elks also chaperone veterans who are taking part in Honor Flights, and offer a free brunch to veterans from a Pembroke Pines nursing home.

However, the Elks also serve the community. They offer youth programs such as the Hoop Shot, which is a free-throw tournament for children from 8 to 13. Winners of this competition can go on to compete at the regional and national level.

Houser says anyone who is community-oriented is welcome to stop by and see what the Elks are all about.
