Swapping items to help the environment in Hialeah

A special event is coming up in Hialeh that will be fun, save attendees money, and help the environment at the same time.

Debris Free Oceans (DFO) is the host of a swap meet at Unbranded Brewing Company. They are suggesting that instead of people buying another costume they will only wear for one Halloween, they instead bring old costumes that are still in good shape, and swap them for new ones.

However, the swap is not limited to costumes, and people planning to attend are welcome to bring books, kitchen supplies décor, artworks, shoes, clothing, and even plants. The organizers will do the sorting while participants pick up the items they want to take home. DFO is not using the “one ticket per item” system, simply allowing people to select what they want and enjoy a beer while they shop.

DFO points out that fashion is one of the industries creating the most pollution worldwide, both in the energy-intensive processes used to create clothing and the contamination that results from washing clothes, which accounts for the release of 35% of microplastics in the ocean. Textiles are the single largest source of plastic pollution in the marine environment. One way to reduce the pollution is to reuse clothing, hence the swap meet.

The Plastic is Scary Clothing + Costume Swap is scheduled for Saturday, October 7. Organizers of events like this can create advertising for use in the local area by using flyer printing to develop handouts.
