Popular salsa singer comes to Hialeah

A popular singer with Puerto Rican roots is coming to Hialeah.

By the time he was ten, Tony Vega was playing conga in the band “La Preferida,” and by 13, was a member of City Trash, a Latino rock band. It was clear to the artist from the beginning that his greatest love was the music of Puerto Rico.

Although Vega began his career in music playing conga, he easily transitioned to vocalist. His first album dropped in 1978, on which he was one of two lead vocalists for Raphy Leavitt’s band La Selecta. Vega’s performances on this album included the extremely popular songs “El Picaflor,” and “Cosquillita.”

After leaving Leavitt, Vega moved to La Mulenze, and then to Willie Rosario’s band, where he was co-lead vocalist with Gilberto Santa Rosa. He contributed to “La nueva cosecha,” an album by Rosario’s group that received a Grammy nomination.

After several months in the U.S., Vega returned to Puerto Rico where he joined forces with Eddie Palmieri, an innovator in contemporary Latin music. Thanks to Vega, Palmieri’s album “La Verdad” won a Grammy, and the band went on a European tour, increasing awareness of salsa music worldwide.

Thus far, Vega has recorded 17 albums, known for his exceptional voice and ability to perform salsa in the “soneros” tradition.

Tony Vega will be at Tarima Producciones on October 25. For concerts like this, organizers may opt to use flyer printing as a cost-effective, straightforward way to promote the event locally.
