A musician credited with helping make the merengue a phenomenon worldwide is coming to Hialeah.
Wilfrido Radamés Vargas Martínez, known professionally as Wilfrido Vargas, is a Dominican trumpeter, arranger, vocalist, producer, and composter who grew up surrounded by music. His mother Bienvenida was a guitarist and flutist, and his father Ramón was a guitarist and accordionist. Vargas began formal musical studies when he was 10 years old, attending the Municipal Academy of Music.
Releasing his first as early as 1972, he has thus far dropped almost 60 albums, releasing the latest, “La Música Vol, 2,” in 2017. The song "El Africano" from "El Funcionario," which he released in 1983, was used the Cuban American rapper DJ Laz as the basis for his hit “Mami El Negro." His career also includes film appearances as well as television work.
Vargas has numerous awards and nominations to his credit. At the 33rd Grammy Awards in 1991, he was nominated for Best Tropical Latin Performance for “Animation,” his 1989 album. At the Viña del Mar International Song Festival in 1992, he won a Silver Seagull, or Gaviota de Plata as it is known in Chile. In 1993, he and fellow Dominican musicians Julio Gautreaux, Manuel Tejada, and Jorge Taveras were decorated by the President of the Dominican Republic with the Order of Christopher Columbus, in the grade of Knight.
