Healthcare provider eyes Hialeah site

A medical center wants to make Hialeah home to its corporate headquarters and has requested variances from the City Commission.

The La Colonia Medical Center caters mostly to Hispanic patients who seek care at the 11 primary care clinics it operates in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Currently, the center is located at 167 W. 23rd Street.

La Colonia would like to build on property located at 101 Hialeah Drive and 158 East Third Street, a site comprising 1.55 acres. The organization is working with J&Y Investment Corporation and has the site under contract from them. A small building is currently on the property and would be razed.

La Colonia has asked the City Commission to consider several variances on the property. A variance, if approved, allows the property owner to use their land for a purpose that was not included in the original zoning ordinances. Variances do not change the zoning laws but permit a “variance” from them.

The corporate headquarters La Colonia proposes would be a five-story structure with a total of 215,250 square feet, and would include warehouse space totaling 9,751 square feet, a pharmacy with 19,242 square feet, meeting rooms and offices totaling 54,336 square feet, and 307 parking spaces. La Colonia has approximately 100 employees.

The designers on the project are the Weston, Florida branch of Moino/Fernandez Architects. When new locations are established, organizations can consider having newly updated Business Cards printed for employees.
