Bestselling author, journalist and researcher Vanessa Woods will present a session on bonobos early in the new year.
Woods was the recipient of the Thomas Lowell Award for her nonfiction book “Bonobo Handshake” in 2010. ‘Meet the Bonobos: Will Their Culture Save Us?’ will be presented in Coral Gables. Residents from across the state are invited to attend, including nearby communities such as Hialeah.
Woods is a research scientist at Duke University in the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology. She visited the Republic of Congo and studied the bonobos, a rare ape species. Researches have stated that the bonobos share 98.7% of human DNA. Females are in charge of the ape communities and they live in a peaceful environment with no violence.
In her presentation, Woods will introduce “Survival of the Friendliest: Understanding Our Origins and Rediscovering Our Common Humanity.” This is her most recent book and was co-authored with her husband. Over 1,000 scientific research document findings will be discussed regarding the theory of human nature and how friendliness is the key to success.
