Deerfield Beach museum to give presentation on local newspaper

The Deerfield Beach Historical Society will hold an event this week where people can learn about one of the city’s past newspapers.

A Legacy on Print: The Story of The Observer is a program led by Dana Eller and Sally Ling that goes over the founding of Deerfield Beach’s local newspaper. The event is part of the historical society’s History After Hours series and will be held at its museum and cultural center. Guests will get to hear about The Observer’s history and talk about memories from the newspaper’s former editors. The presenters will also read personal essays from David Eller.

Eller is the president of MWI Pumps, a company based in Deerfield Beach that employs more than 250 employees. The business offers water pump solutions for agricultural water pumps, flood control, and emergency pumping. Sally Ling is a local historian who has covered many Florida-based topics, such as Al Capone’s time in Miami and Florida’s involvement with bringing in alcohol during the Prohibition era. Ling is also a published author and has been featured as a speaker on NPR.

The presentation on The Observer will be held this Wednesday, October 21 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. There is no cost to take part in the event, though people are allowed to reserve their spots for the lecture in advance. Local historical groups that host talks like this may use poster printing services to promote their events to the community.
