Cape Coral strives to be bicycle friendly

The city of Cape Coral has submitted an application to the League of American Bicyclists to receive status as a ‘Bicycle Friendly Community’.

City Public Works Department Manager Persides Zambrano noted that he feels that there is every chance that Cape Coral could be chosen to receive this designation, not least because of all the efforts that have been put in to make it a place where those who choose to ride instead of drive feel supported in their decision. It is also a city in which healthy lifestyles are promoted.

The application included a variety of questions designed to determine how ‘bike friendly’ a community is. They dealt with everything from its facilities for pedestrians and cyclists to what sort of events it hosts that promote these activities. It also asked for statistics related to safety issues, “rules of the road”, and what future plans are in place to ensure everyone’s safety. A printing company can Print items like signage, bike path and route maps, and informational Brochures that explain the bike related regulations in the area. This may help it to meet the criteria that the League of American Bicyclists uses in its determination.

A response to the application may not come until late December. Should the community receive the status, it will be the second in Lee County that the organization has deemed to be a ‘Bicycle Friendly Community’.
