Cape Coral 4-H Club to give out free seeds

Gardeners in the Cape Coral area have the chance to get a jump on seed starting, free of charge.

The VegHeads 4-H club, from nearly by Lehigh Acres, will be distributing fall vegetable seeds for free at the North Fort Myers Rec Center. The club receives the seeds free of charge from the Rural King of Bonita Springs, which donates expiring seeds to the group at the end of the season. For the past two years, the club has been given millions of seeds by Rural King.

Clubs that are organizing giveaways and special events can use poster printing to advertise the opportunity. According to Karen Harty, the supervisor for the 4-H club, the group receives enough seeds from the donor to fill five cars.

After getting the seeds, members of the 4-H club sort them by type and put together variety packs with several packages of seeds. Club members only give out seeds for vegetables that gardeners will be able to successfully grow in Florida. Varieties such as squash are not given out.

The club is trying something new this year by having the neighboring recreation center participate in the distribution of the seeds. Packets of seeds will be placed in a basket at the front desk of the rec center. Anyone interested in receiving seeds can ask from them at the desk.

Distribution of the seeds will begin tomorrow, August 8.
