A two-day workshop in Cape Coral will give participants the chance to get up close and personal with bee hives.
Intro to Beekeeping, a hands-on lesson offers the special opportunity to don a protective suit and work directly with bees and their hives. Instructors who present classes such as this often use flyer printing to get the word out about their workshops.
This course will cover all aspects of beekeeping presented through a lecture by a master beekeeper. On day one, students will hear information on how to become a beekeeper. They will learn about basic tools and equipment, bee colonies, managing hives, the harvesting of honey and looking out for pests and diseases.
On day two, the class will be instructed on how to properly wear the required protective clothing and the correct procedure for lighting a smoker.
When working with the hives, they will be assisted in finding the queen, identifying bee eggs and the brood and viewing the honey production.
Testing for certain pests will also be explained. The class will then learn to make their own hives and will take home supplies to start out as a beekeeper. They will also take home a one-year membership in the Gulf Coast Beekeepers of Florida.
The Introduction to Beekeeping will be held at Greenview Aquaponics Family Farm and Apiary in Cape Coral on January 18 and 19, 2025.
