What's Happening in Brandon, FL…

Local museum to hold late March festival

Creative Loafing and Tampa Museum of Art will be holding their fourth annual Gasparilla Fringe Festival at the end of March. This event is a celebration of multiple genres of performing arts.

Guests from here in Brandon can watch actors interpret artwork, dancers performing improvisation pieces, and steampunk pole dancing by Impulse Pole Dance. There will be belly dancing by Hip Expressions, cheerleading, and possibly a couple of flash mobs. Young poets will be expressing their views in a poetry slam titled The Heard Em Say Youth Arts Collective GASP!

David Manson and his Mobile Itinerant Funk Unit, a marching band, will be bringing the funk. Roxanne Fay will be presenting her one-woman show ‘Paradise Whiskey’.” Noel Rochford of UNRB will be soloing with psychedelia-tinged ukulele performance, while Audrey Richter from Collective Soles Dance Company will be performing ‘Magdalena’ in tribute to the artwork and life of Frida Kahlo.

An experimental guitar virtuoso, Billy May III, will be creating soundscapes that provide performers with inspiration for improvisation, while Arielle Lane will be bringing her musical saw. A great of 14 area writers will be creating songs, plays, poems, and stories from 23 images from TMA’s Alex Katz’s works.

Pictures taken of this event would make colorful calendars for the museum to sell.

The event will be held March 31, from 6:00 pm until 10:00 pm in Downtown Tampa at the Tampa Museum of Art, 120 W. Gasparilla Plaza.
