Day of the Dead comes alive in Bradenton

Next month marks the 20th anniversary of the Festival of Skeletons in Bradenton, the city's celebration of Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.

Two days of family festivities will include colorful displays, energetic music and activities as well as an array of booths featuring food and merchandise. Vendors who participate in similar events often promote their products by having local Print shops provide poster printing.

Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican cultural fiesta, celebrated in Latin America and other locations around the world. It honors and remembers loved ones who have passed, while at the same time celebrating life. Family and friends decorate graves and altars and commemorate through music and dance, storytelling, feasting and colorful costumes. Decorative skulls known as calaveras as well as marigold flowers are typically used in Day of the Dead celebrations.

The Village of the Arts is the venue for the Bradenton festival. It's a small neighborhood of cottages where artists live and work in residential studios, a collective which was created by the Artists Guild of Manatee. The unique local galleries will be exhibiting numerous shrines, altars, and other art. In addition, loved ones, including pets, will be honored at a community shrine.

Dia de los Muertos will be held November 1, 2024, from 11 am to 4 pm, and 6 pm to 9:30 pm. A second day of celebration will be on November 2, 2024, from 11 am to 4 pm.
