Fairfield to get its teeth into history

Fairfield Museum and History Center continues its History Bites series with two talks over the next two months.

The museum's monthly History Bites series is a lunchtime lecture that corresponds to the museum's current "Building an American Voice" exhibition.

Having returned in January with a lecture on “The Striking Summer of 1915,” the series will continue with “The Great Loser from Illinois: Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 Visit to Connecticut.”

Norwich historian Dale Plummer will discuss Lincoln's whirlwind tour of Connecticut to get Governor William Buckingham re-elected. In actuality, Lincoln was on a mission to ensure his nomination for president.

The lecture will be given to honor Lincoln on his birthday, February 12, and will take place from noon to 1:00 pm at 370 Beach Road.

John E. Herzog, a financial historian, will be giving the next History Bites lecture, called "Cornelius Vanderbilt & the New York Central Railroad." After consolidating three railroad lines into New York Central Railroad in 1869, Vanderbilt revolutionized the railroad system.

Refreshments and snacks will be provided at both of these events, and these programs will be free with admission to the museum. Museums and other institutions that provide information series often have the series included in their visitor guide brochure printing.

This lecture will take place from noon to 1:00 pm on March 12 at the museum.
