Food critic Brad A. Johnson has named Chicken 65, which is a spicy fried chicken dish served at an Indian restaurant called Anjappar, as the best fried chicken that he has ever tasted.
Anjappar is an Indian Chettinad-style restaurant located in Tustin. The restaurant is situated in a cozy location with plenty of seating and a graphic design on one wall that features a peacock and roses.
The Chicken 65 dish is based on an old recipe from South India. The manager of the restaurant does not know for certain why the dish has that name, however theories making rounds on the internet claim that it is because 65 different varieties of chili are used.
According to Brad A. Johnson, writing for The OCR, Chicken 65 is a fried dish that still manages to maintain its spicy flavor, unlike the fried chicken popular in Nashville. The chicken for Chicken 65 is marinated using a creamy yogurt, different varieties of chili and special spices for a minimum of eight hours which makes the flesh soft and tender. The dish is spiced heavily however it is not overwhelming.
For those who are looking for very hot dishes, Johnson says that the restaurant offers dishes strong enough to ‘dissolve a metal spoon’, but other dishes are not overwhelming despite containing plenty of spice.
