Commander Michael Hopkins is the current leader of the ISS. Ethan Javert had the honor of putting forward the first question and asked the commander about what goes through the minds of astronauts while the shuttle into space was taking off. The commander answered that the takeoff is scary in its own way, as the lift-off procedure is basically the astronauts sitting on top of a controlled explosion.
Teacher Sara Brigman was responsible for making this exciting conversation between her students and the astronauts happen. She commented:
"This last year has been just really exciting with a lot of anticipation. All of the teachers have been working hard planning lessons, our staff has been doing tons behind the scenes for the kids to prepare for this."
A native from Southern California is currently on the space station. Victor Glover hails from Pomona and hopes to inspire more astronauts from the region. A Logo Design is often found on the tails of space shuttles.
The conversation with the commander led a few of the students to consider a career in space, which was the goal of the program.
