Early work underway at Tustin High humanities building

Hard hats were donned and ceremonial shovelfuls of dirt turned at a ground breaking ceremony on February 19 on the grounds of Tustin High School.

Tustin City Council members, High School Principal Christine Matos, and Tustin Unified board members made a formal start on the construction that will take place for the next six months at Tustin High School. The campus’ new 14,000-square-foot building is expected to conclude in time for the start of the 2016-2017 school year on August 29.

The new two-story building will be housing the entire Humanities Department, which is currently scattered across the school’s campus. It will contain a conference room, 12 social sciences and history classrooms, restrooms, and an elevator. Included in the plans for the “state-of-the-art” classrooms are audio amplification systems, interactive projectors and whiteboards, and laptops.

Tustin High School, which was built in 1921, has a student body of 2,250. The city, as well as the school district, will likely ask their providers of printing services to include information regarding the campus’ newest addition.

The $6m project, which the campus modernization program Measure L is funded through, will also provide a home for Tustin High School’s Model United Nations program. According to Matos, the new building will supply a common location, and this will permit a greater degree of collaboration and project-based learning.
