Torrance college given funds for special program

A 2023 Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions federal grant has been awarded to the Warrior Initiative for Greater Success (WINGS) at El Camino College in Torrance.

The grant amounts to $2,933,700 over five years and will go to support professional development for faculty who teach English and math courses at the college, as well as being used to provide success coaching for the students who are part of the WINGS initiative.

These students tend to be primarily low-income and/or Hispanic students, who often have high academic needs. Students will work with success coaches who will create personalized plans to address barriers that may be preventing students from achieving their goals. The students’ progress will be monitored so they will be able to access the services they need.

Brochure printing can be used to provide more details for students on new college services and how they can be accessed.

Dr. Brenda Thames, Superintendent and President of El Camino College, said that these funds will be used for programs and services that previously have hindered students in being able to achieve their professional and academic goals. Director of Grants Development and Management, Liliana Islas, says that this program is special as it provides professional development for faculty staff and comprehensive support for students.

There will be 50 students enrolled in WINGS in the spring semester, with 100 students joining the program each year starting in the fall.
