Wine courses to be offered by Stockton college

Wine hospitality courses will be offered by San Joaquin Delta College in Stickton for the first time this spring.

These courses will provide an opportunity for those who work in the tourism and restaurant industries to earn more money, and for those who love wine to learn more about the drink.

Courses can be taken individually to increase one’s knowledge, or as a sequence in order to earn a certificate or degree in wine hospitality. Courses include Wine Service for Hospitality, Introduction to Viticulture/Winemaking, and Food and Wine Pairing. More information about such courses is often provided with brochure printing.

The college is in an area that produces close to 40% of the premium zinfandel wine in the state, and is home to 80 boutique wineries. In 2020 alone, more than 600,000 tons of grapes were harvested in San Joaquin County, with a value of close to $340m.

Culinary arts professor at Delta College, Mark Berkner, said that this is a chance for the college to offer its expertise to the community in an industry that is so important to the region. Berkner added that these classes will be of particular use to those working in the state’s wine industry, but will also be of interest to those who simply appreciate the drink and its value to the region.
