Each year, Nurse.com chooses 30 finalists for its GEM Award, with those named honored at a gala event in Los Angeles, California. Among this year's finalists is Donna Beckman, who works with the San Joaquin County Office of Education in Stockton, CA.
Beckman wears many hats with the Office of Education; she serves as school nurse for the special education department, and is also the health services supervisor. She offers case management and care services to the many students and families involved in the special education department, and also works with a local dentist to make sure that kindergarten students who are developmentally disabled get oral health screenings, if they do not otherwise have access to dental care.
She teaches CPR to staff, and provides yearly training to special education staff on the prevention of communicable diseases being spread. She also works with yearly staff TB testing clinics.
This is far from the first honor that Beckman has been able to add to her business card printing; in 2014, she was chosen as the California State Nurses Organization School Nurse of the Year, and received the same award for the Northern Section in 2013.
Nurse.com has served as a source of jobs, learning opportunities, news, and other resources for 30 years. Produced by Gannett Healthcare Group, the company annually recognizes achievements of nurses through its Giving Excellence Meaning (GEM) Awards.
