Swift response to Santa Clara power outage

Pacific Gas & Electricity (PG&E) managed to restore power services to almost all of the areas affected by a public safety power shutoff within two days last week.

The shutoff started last Wednesday, October 14. It affected more than 40,000 customers spread out across 24 counties including Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Alameda, and Contra Costa. The utility service provider stated that the shutoff was necessary because of weather conditions that made the risk of attracting catastrophic wildfires too high.

Power was restored to most of the areas by 5:00 pm on Friday, by which time 38,000 customers were reconnected.

Meteorologists recorded wind gusts moving at 50mph in areas with a high risk of starting wildfires, such as San Mateo and Napa. PG&E stated that de-energizing power lines in these places was crucial to preventing fires. Meanwhile, wind speeds in Contra Costa County were as high as 61mph and Sonoma County saw wind speeds reach 73mph.

Before power was restored, PG&E sent out technicians to inspect the power lines. Approximately 3,200 miles of energy lines were checked and made 30 reports of damage caused by harsh weather. Printing services can be used to inform people about ongoing public works like this.

PG&E is expected to send a detailed report about the damaged lines to the California Public Utilities Commission soon.
