Santa Clara treads the boards at playwright fest

Santa Clara University is gearing up for its yearly New Playwrights Festival. The three-day event combines local talent with a celebration of creativity and the art of stagecraft.

The performances go hand in hand with the playwriting course that is run every year at the university by Brian Thorstenson. Participants in the class start by going through the entire process of crafting a one-act play, from the initial idea all the way through writing a draft, revising it, and adding the stage directions. When the work is completed, it is assembled into Booklets, and that is when the preparation for the festival truly begins.

Once the ink is dry on the booklet printing, directors are chosen from among interested members of the drama department. Auditions are held on campus by the directors, who then pick the best actor for the role. The one-act plays are performed over the course of three days, written, staged, and performed entirely by faculty, students, and alumni from the campus. This makes the festival a true celebration of every aspect of the stage from beginning to end, as well as a celebration of the creativity and ingenuity of SCU students.

The New Playwrights Festival will be performed from May 29 to May 31, starting at 7:30 pm at the Fess Parker Studio Theatre, located at 500 El Camino Real. Tickets for each night cost $5 and can be ordered in advance. Anyone interested in attending should visit the website for more information.
