In November, Santa Clara added 1,800 jobs, while the Bay Area added 1,700 jobs the same month. The leisure and hospitality industry alone added about 1,400 new jobs to Santa Clara's market, while the technology industry added about 200.
Overall, the state of California gained a total of 5,500 new jobs in November, improving the unemployment rate to 5.7%. That is the healthiest the state's job market has been in the past eight years. About a third of the new jobs are concentrated in Santa Clara.
At this time, Santa Clara County has 1,074,600 nonfarm payroll jobs. That is only marginally fewer fewer than the record high set in December 2000, when there were a total of 1,075,600 nonfarm payroll jobs in Santa Clara.
According to Steve Levy, director of the Palo Alto-based Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy:
“All regions of California have now regained all the jobs they lost during the recovery and moved into positive territory."
He added that Bay Area job levels are 11.4% higher than during the recession.
