Not-for-profit groups located in Santa Clara can now apply for mini-grants of up to $1,000 each if the money will be used on commercial kitchens preparing meals for those in need.
The announcement came from county officials. The application portal opens on March 18 and it will be run by The Santa Clara County Consumer and Environmental Protection Agency. Before a recent change in state laws, nonprofits were barred from assisting the needy in this manner. Poster printing is one way nonprofits could let the needy know about their services.
Many of the organizations that want to prepare meals for hungry people had limited access to commercial kitchens. Commercial kitchens are preferred because they have the necessary hygiene standards and equipment that would allow the nonprofits to operate at the kind of scale necessary. The organizations were previously forced to redirect scarce resources towards outfitting their own kitchens or renting a facility that would not run them afoul of state laws.
According to Joe Simitian, who is the president of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors:
“I’ve heard from many…nonprofits who want to help who simply can’t do that. [The mini-grants] should cover the costs for local nonprofits to rent a compliant kitchen.”
Organizations that have a 501c(3) classification are allowed to put in a maximum of three applications each for a $1,000 that will be used to make meals for hungry people.
