San Francisco mayor creates new position

London Breed, the mayor of San Francisco, announced recently that she has created the position of Director of Housing Delivery with the mission of working with the various city departments involved in housing, to streamline the permitting process.

Mayor Breed’s aim in creating the position is to cut the permitting process time in half for mid-size and large housing projects. She notes that San Francisco needs new housing desperately, but the current method of processing permits is extremely slow, as projects get passed around city departments, but do not move forward. She said that once the projects are approved by the Planning Commission, the city needs to move rapidly to get the permits issued so more homes can be built.

The new Director of Housing Delivery will have a Housing Delivery Team at his or her disposal, and the team will comprise a number of housing coordinators. The director will also help to smooth out the entitlement process, and create a plan to put applications for projects into a digital format so various departments can see them at the same time. When a new position like this is created, officials have a chance to create appropriate Letterheads.

The new director will devise a system of keeping track of the builds so it can be determined if the city is meeting its housing goals. The system will also make certain that are enough staff members available to avoid a backlog of applications.
