Rock-country band to stop in San Francisco

An outfit that helps people face tough challenges is set to play San Francisco.

North Carolina-based band American Aquarium is the brainchild of frontman B.J. Barham, who hails from Reidsville. His love of his state shines through in his songs, even though his subject matter is often painful, frequently centering on the idea of loss. Barham says that he turned to song writing to share the pain of loss and help others who are also dealing with these events.

The losses that are most often the subject of American Aquarium’s songs are both direct and indirect, including that caused by aging, which inhibits stamina and contributes to the end of a career. The band’s sound, which includes pedal steel guitar, is often described as soulful yet uplifting.

American Aquarium has 14 albums to its credit, dropping the most recent, “Chicamacomico,” in 2022. Chicamacomico, which is on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, is a life-saving station built in 1874. Critics enjoy the irony of naming a work about loss for a facility that saved lives.

A review says:

“A brilliant, brilliant set from American Aquarium tonight. The frontman was extremely eloquent and amusing in between singing powerfully about heartache and desperation. . . . ”

American Aquarium will appear in San Francisco, at the Great American Music Hall, on August 12. Performances like this can be enhanced when organizers use poster printing to create stunning advertising.
