Regional voting model approved by county supervisors
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors recently approved a regional model the thrust of which will be to replace traditional polling stations with regional vote centers and permit resident to have ballots mailed to them.
The decision by the Board of Supervisors would put San Diego County in line with fifteen other California counties, including Orange County and Los Angeles County, that have already made the switch to the vote center model. Those counties that preceded San Diego County in making this change represent almost half of California voters.
Beginning in the gubernatorial election in June 2022 all active voters will be sent a ballot returnable by mail with postage pre-paid or taken to a vote center or drop off locations. Replacement ballots, same-day voter registration and language assistance will also be available at vote centers.
Banner printing services make new locations stand out to the public.
According to Supervisor Nora Vargas, the last two elections, where voting by mail was offered in response to the COVID pandemic, showed this method to be successful. Moreover, other counties that have made the change have also seen higher voter participation rates.
The county Registrar of Voters will over the coming months be holding workshops and public meetings to educate residents about the regional model. It has been suggested that public outreach should include redistricting maps that were created in response to the 2020 Census so people can learn about their new representatives.
