Sacramento spends Saturdays with Beethoven

Sacramento classical music lovers will be reserving the next two Saturdays for a Beethoven Festival.

Under the baton of guest conductor Jeffrey Kahane, the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera will be presenting ‘Akademie’, the legendary 1808 tour de force of music by Ludwig van Beethoven. Due to the length of the original concert, the entire performance will be spread over two days.

The first evening’s program will feature the ‘Pastoral’ Symphony No.6, Ah, Perfido and Piano Concerto No. 4, with Kahane as the pianist as well as the conductor.

The second part of the concert will be performed the following Saturday. That evening’s program will include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Choral Fantasy and Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus from Mass in C Major.

The original 1808 Akademie was a benefit for and organized by Beethoven. The concert was four hours long and presented in the unheated Vienna Theater an der Wien. This was Beethoven last public piano performance and the premier performance of his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, and his Choral Fantasia in C minor. The performance of the first part of Beethoven’s ‘Akademie’ will be this Saturday, January 19, beginning at 8:00 pm at the Sacramento Community Center Theater 1301 L Street.

The second part of the performance will be a week later, on January 26, also starting at 8:00 pm.
