The Sacramento MLK committee will be celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the California State University-Sacramento University Ballroom on January 25.
The evening will begin with a reception at 5:00 pm. That will be followed with a dinner and program starting at 6:00 pm. The keynote address will be given by Ruby Bridges. Today an American rights activist, Bridges’ childhood saw her involved in the school desegregation crisis in New Orleans back in 1960.
Around 28,000 participants are expected to participate in the two marches honoring Dr. King that will meet at the state Capitol. One march, the south march, will begin at 9:00 am at Sacramento City College. The other, the north march, will start at 8:00 am at Grant High School.
After the rally, a Diversity Expo will be at the Sacramento Convention Center, 1400 J Street, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. The expo’s theme “Hope Lives” will be reflected in the positive impact people are making in our world and community. Exhibits will include arts and crafts, colleges, employers, health professionals, educators, spoken word, and music.
Among other activities, there will be robotics demonstrations, blood pressure and dental screenings, green tech cars, and a special MLK365 program.
