The Team Sweden Special Olympics USA Parade of Champions, presented by Riverside’s Sport Commission, will feature 500 athletes, trainers, and coaches.
The Riverside Color Guard and the award-winning Kingsmen Band will lead the proceedings. Special Olympians from Sweden will be marching through downtown Riverside, where local citizens and businesses are encouraged to turn out to welcome the athletes.
Riverside is one of the 100 host towns that will be welcoming some of the 7,000 Special Olympians, as well as the 3,000 coaches and trainers who will be attending the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles later in July. Athletes from around 177 countries will be completing in 25 different sports.
The towns will house and entertain the athletes for three days before the event. Sweden’s Special Olympics USA team will bring 344 athletes and 137 trainers and coaches to Riverside. The athletes will get to experience a Riverside Summer Live Concert and an ‘All-American’ dinner at nearby Fairmont Park after the parade. The Special Olympic Committee will want to have a photographer there to take plenty of pictures to use in poster printing for future Olympic promotional material.
The parade is scheduled to start in Downtown Riverside at Main and 5th at 4:00 pm and will go until 5:00 pm on Wednesday, July 22. It will begin near the Riverside Convention Center and go to the Riverside City Hall.
