Riverside revs up for fifth Tamale Festival

The Spanish Town Heritage Foundation will be holding its fifth Tamale Festival in a couple of weeks. Along with delicious tamales the event will be a celebration of families, Spanish history, and culture.

Two stages will have colorful Mexican dancing such as Leyenda Ballet Folklorico and music including T Lopez, Felipe Orozco, ILKA, and DW3. The Susie Hansen Latin Band will be in concert. Pictures of the Mariachi version of Beauty and the Beast will make interesting Calendars and Holiday Cards for Cinco de Mayo.

A Family Connections Booth will be offering tamales, presenting folklorico, and lavishing guests with Spanish hospitality. This will be an opportunity for visitors to learn about the 10 original families, including Lorenzo Trujillo, who came from Abiquiu, New Mexico to settle in two communities in Riverside and Colton.

Food vendors will be selling treats such as churro sundaes and shrimp tamales. Gift vendors will be selling items with a Spanish theme.

The Kids’ Zone, with interactive games and activities, will keep the little ones busy. A Best Tamale competition will have Guest Judge Chef Shannon.

Proceeds will go to the restoration of the Trujilo Adobe – Riverside’s oldest surviving architectural remnant - and the future restoration of the Trujilo School, and Cantina.

The festival will be Saturday, April 22 at White Park 3885 Market Street in Downtown Riverside from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm.
