Riverside loves tamales

Greater Riverside Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is hosting its Eighth Annual Riverside Tamale Festival in September. The festival is a celebration of Spanish history and family culture.

Attendees can enjoy tamales from local vendors and beer from local breweries. This year, beer will be served in 16oz. cups to cut down on waste.

Free live entertainment will include Lucha Libre, which will have five performances throughout the day. Mariachi Divas is a tribute band of females honoring Selena, Lina Ronstadt, and Jenny Rivera. Las Chikas will bring on the salsa, and other performers will include the Susie Hanson Latin Band, Ballet Folklorico, Felipe Orozco, and Conga Lovers.

There will be a Kids’ Zone and Best Tamale Competition. The competition will be divided into two categories. Local vendors will be vying with one another for the coveted title of Best Vendor Tamale while the other division will be Best Home Made Tamale.

VIP Tamale tasting tickets will include the opportunity to taste both division entries and vote for the favorite.

Other vendors will be selling Mexican-related merchandise and products. Passers-by often like to collect vendors’ Business Cards so they can purchase items at a later date.

Proceeds will go to the Spanish Town Heritage Foundation, an organization working to restore Riverside’s “old town.”

Riverside Tamale Festival will take place September 19 at White Park, 3885 Market Street, from 11:00 am until 7:00 pm.
