Soon it will be time for celebrating the Fourth of July at Riverside National Cemetery Concert for Heroes. Attendees will enjoy an evening of popular classics and patriotic music, performed by The Inland Empire/Riverside County Philharmonic Orchestra. The finale will be the old favorite ‘Stars and Stripes Forever’, which will accompany the fireworks display.
This event is actually one of a kind, as it is the only symphonic concert to be held in a national cemetery. Photos taken at sundown will make great subjects for future poster printing. The singing Lindy Sisters will perform an hour before the program starts, with tunes from the Big Band Era. Conductor Tomasz Golka will then lead the orchestra in playing patriotic songs and familiar works by composers such as Samuel Barber, Franz Shubert, Charles Gounod and, of course, John Philip Sousa.
Last year’s attendance was around 7,000. Since the amphitheater only has 2,700 seats, many attendees may opt for sitting out on the grass. Flashlights, lawn chairs, and blankets are recommended.
Since 1978, Riverside National Cemetery has grown to accommodate 200,000 veterans and their families. The cemetery averages 35 services daily, and is the most active of all 131 U.S Department of Veterans Affairs’ national cemeteries.
The free celebration will be held at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, Thursday July 3rd, from 7:30pm – 10pm.
