The Riverside Concert Band will be presenting its 140th Birthday Concert this month. Music will be presented by not only the Riverside Concert Band but by its Swing Ensemble as well. Admission will be free.
Guests are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and picnic baskets. Other goings on will include dancing, face painting and children’s activities. Although free water will be available, cold drinks will have to be purchased.
The band has been around since 1876 and is composed of members of the community who donate their time and talents to providing music for numerous public, private and civic events. The band’s 30 members, ranging from senior citizens to high school students, play brass, woodwind or percussion instruments in the old familiar band-concert style. Guests will be regaled with patriotic classics such as “Stars and Stripes Forever,” You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “National Emblem.” The band will also play tunes from movie soundtracks and familiar classical music.
The band’s Flyers indicate that the eighteen or so members who have branched out to form a swing ensemble will be adding that musical genre to the evening’s agenda.
This birthday bash will be Saturday, June 24th from 4:00 pm until 8:00 at Villegas Park, 3091 Esperanza Street here in Riverside. The park is located by the Ysmael Villegas Community Center.
