This holiday season, Riverside locals will get a chance to experience a presentation of the unique opera ‘Amahl and the Night Visitors’, written by Gian Carlo Menotti.
The family-friendly event offers a new take on the tale of the Nativity as seen through the eyes of a young boy. It will feature plenty of singing and colorful costumes.
The story is about a young boy who is slightly disabled and is known for stretching the truth at times, thus his mother has doubts when he tells her about a bright star in the sky. That night, he answers a knock on the door and finds The Three Kings asking for a place to rest. After letting them in, the Kings offer stories and later, the mother attempts to steal some of their gold meant for the child. When she is apprehended, they take pity on her and her son, allowing them to keep what she has taken.
Those who plan to attend the presentation may want to bring a camera for picture taking for possible later use in creating Holiday Cards for next year.
The opera will be given this Sunday, December 27, at The Box, Fox Entertainment Plaza, 3635 Market St. in downtown Riverside. The first show will start at 4:00 pm and the second will begin at 6:00 pm.
